Chapter 5

Slip Up Trying To Be Slick

On a frosty January afternoon, Shay delivers mail in the suburb of Oak Lawn. After finishing her rounds on her current block, she returns to her postal vehicle and receives an unexpected call her from her mother, Marsha. Shay connects the call with her Bluetooth as she prepares the mail for the next block. “Hey, momma.” Shay yawns. “How are you?”

“I’m okay baby. What are you doing yawning? I know you ain’t tired. You just came back from two weeks of vacation. Girl, you better snap out of it and drop that damn mail off.” Marsha says sarcastically as she puts a bag of popcorn in the microwave.

Shay hears the beeps from the microwave buttons being selected. “You at the ATM, mom?”

“Shoot nah girl, that’s the microwave. I’m popping me some popcorn before Jeopardy comes on.”

“What! Momma you off you off today.” Shay exclaims as she drives to the next block.

“What you mean girl? You ain’t the only one with vacation time. I took me a few days off, because if I didn’t I was ended up hurting one of the people on my job. I swear I have never been around so many arrogant, loud mouth, bird brains in my life.” Marsha declares as she smells the scent of melted butter and hears the sound of the kernels popping.

“C’mon momma, you’re a bill collector. I would think you would be used to people cursing you out and talking crazy by now. You have been doing it for over ten years.”

“You know what? The bad thing about it, it’s not even the people I call. It’s the folks in the office. I mean some of them walk around with their noses in the air like we ain’t all making the same twelve dollars an hour or something. I’m telling you some of them are some real characters. Anyway, that’s a whole ‘nother story. What I called you for, is to tell you how you’re Aunt Jackie is dragging you and Shon names through the mud. I mean she straight up threw y’all under the bus. She said you ain’t gave her no rent money in six months.”

Shay smacks her lips. “Mama now you know dang gone well that’s a bold face lie.”

“Tuh! You ain’t gotta tell me. I already know, Marshayla. I wanted to tell you not to rent from her, but I know you love you some Jackie. But I said to myself ‘as messy as Jackie is it was only a matter of time before her and Shay bump heads’. Jackie is a miserable bitch and always has been. She could have everything in the world and still want what you have. She just has this covetous nature about herself. The truth of the matter is that Jackie is jealous of you, Shay.
